The difference between perception and sight

The Ralph Kerle Art Gallery, in Manly is hosting a thought-provoking evening dissecting the physiology and aesthetics of sight, with donations kindly supporting Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation.

Join Dr Con Petsoglou, Ophthalmologist Sydney Eye Hospital, Medical Director NSW Tissue Bank and Senior Lecturer, Sydney University and Ralph Kerle, renowned Australian fine art photographer for an evening of intrigue, illusion, and sense-making as they explore how our brain works to make visual sense of our worlds.

Ralph’s own impaired sight has actually aided him in creating a unique style of photographic artworks that are based on visual illusion. You can read Ralph’s story here.

“Vision provides over fifty per cent of how we perceive the world,” says Ralph Kerle.

“It is the prime source for the brain in its search for meaning in the moment. Yet as a result of the way the eye sees the moment and transfers the information to the synapses in the brain, we create illusions that are far from the reality we are actually seeing.”

‘The Difference between Perception and Sight: How We Make Sense of Our World’, will be held on Friday 18 March at the Ralph Kerle Gallery, 30 The Corso, Manly, starting at 6pm.

The event includes a live auction raising vital funds for Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation.

About

Ralph Kerle’s photographic artwork is based on capturing moments in time when nature creates visual abstractions on the surface of the water. They are images that exist in reality and can be seen as peaceful meditations on the way we engage with the environment in which we live and how we think, see and communicate our sense of ‘being’ in it.
